Following in the footsteps of eccentric billionaire Richard Branson, fellow billionaire Elon Musk has announced that he has plans to send 80 000 people to Mars!
Musk is best known as being the founder and CEO of the private spaceflight company SpaceX (the first private company to transport cargo to the International Space Station). The epic ascension is not the only shocker, he also has aspirations of building a small city on Mars and his plans will kick off in the next 15 years with a ten strong crew armed with supplies. The crew will then sought to create an infrastructure, transparent domes that will pave the foundation of his envisioned colony. Skeptics may argue that it is a mere pipe dream but Musk is hell-bent on seeing his plans come to fruition. He already has a price tag set for the intergalactic trip – half a million U.S dollars, a price that will burn a hole into the sturdiest of pockets.
Musk has ascertained that the key to his quest will lie with the development of what he refers to as a rapid and reusable rocket that will land vertically. That rocket is responsible for keeping costs down. The first batch of people to touchdown on the red planet will infuse the soil with nutrients so that they can grow crops. The new aliens will make use of machines that harvest methane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide as well as extracting water. It sounds like a highly ambitious project but with the right resources who knows? Musk will probably turn spaceman sooner than expected.
