The 2010 World Cup is around the corner and with countries beginning to arrive and their training getting underway, all manners of excitement are starting to build. Now you know who our favourites to win the World Cup are, but what about the teams that could potentially cause major upsets and walk away with the World Cup?
Portugal may have only just qualified for the World Cup, but that does not mean they cannot walk away with top honours. In fact, they remain the number three in world football and they will be potent with the likes of Ronaldo, Bruno, Carvalho, Pepe, Simao and Deco on the field.
Argentina also had a terrible qualifying campaign, but is not a team to be disregarded as possible favourites to win the World Cup title. With Messi, who most people regard as the best player in the world, leading the team from the midfield, you can be sure that Argentina will be a team to be reckoned with. Messi will also be backed up by Mascherano and Veron who are both very experienced campaigners for Argentina.
Not having ever really featured in a World Cup to date, the USA come into the tournament as the runners up in the Confederations Cup held in South Africa last year, and that was after being ahead of Brazil (FIFA number one ranked) for the majority of the game. They are performing and, more importantly, winning. This is no team to underestimate, and we think a majority of the other teams have noticed this as well.
South Africa may not be the highest ranked team participating in the World Cup but they are definitely going to be the crowd favourite. Over the last few years South Africa has not been rated as one of the better football nations and have proven that point on many occasions. However, lately they have been playing some really good football and have scored nine goals in three matches, which included a record of five goals in one match. A team that has built momentum, have home ground advantage and are determined to prove the world wrong are a team to be reckoned with. Good luck South Africa!
