Rows of chrome and motorised machinery have become the signature of today’s commercial ‘gyms.’ Weight-training routines that emphasise applying isolation movements in a bodybuilding manner, along with some ‘cardio’ performed at a moderate intensity to keep you in the ‘fat-burning zone’ is what you’ll find the bulk of gym-goers performing today. Many will continue to follow the same boring routines despite not seeing any real and sustainable results. While others, frustrated with the lack of progress, will engage in a high volume of endurance-based training such as running and cycling or attempt many of the other fitness fads out there like pole dancing, Swiss ball training or even the use of a balance band. Regardless of which group, chances are they aren’t really achieving their desired results or are being led to believe that they truly are fit. True, you probably aren’t going to get very far with that form of training, and no, you aren’t fit; unless of course you’re doing CrossFit.
CrossFit is a fitness program that uses constantly varied (always changing) functional movements (essential to everyday life or sport) applied at a high intensity (relative to your fitness level). It is designed to increase your capacity (ability to do work) over a much different time (from short to long duration) and modal (any physical task) domains. CrossFit develops a broad and general fitness that prepares you for the unknown and unknowable because, in life and sport, you rarely know what you are going to come up against.
The CrossFit program is designed to be universally scalable making it the perfect method for any committed individual, regardless of their current fitness level and experience. The same routines are used for the elderly trying to stay healthy and for cage fighters preparing for competition bouts. The load and volume is scaled according to your needs. The program does not change because in CrossFit they believe that the needs of elite athletes and grandparents differ by degree, not by kind.
CrossFit is also ‘The Sport of Fitness” because it emphasises personal athletic achievement. The coaches are dedicated to helping you become stronger, fitter and faster, and you can test this by tracking your performances over time or by pitting yourself against fellow CrossFitters during workouts or events. CrossFit events have you preparing for the complete unknown. Event details are typically released one or two days before the event, leaving you no time to specialise; life, and sports in general, punish the specialist.
Where and how do you CrossFit? CrossFit is an open-source model which means that each of the 2000 plus CrossFit affiliated gyms worldwide post workouts on their sites daily, for their communities and for the rest of the world to observe what they’re doing. You can attempt the workouts at home or at a gym, but you won’t be receiving the full effect of CrossFit. You probably aren’t familiar with many of the movements, and one of the first rules in CrossFit states that movement technique precedes intensity. You are unlikely to have the sort of equipment you would find in a CrossFit “box” or the space required to use the equipment. Most importantly, you will not have the guidance of an expert coach. In CrossFit, the science lies in the movement, the art in the programming, and the benefit lies within group coaching. So if you’re interested, then get down to an official CrossFit affiliate.
