We’ve already looked at the Best Sushi Restaurants in Cape Town and the Best Sushi Restaurants in Johannesburg, and as we mentioned there, if you’re looking for the best sushi spots around SA, these are our top picks, and for this feature we’re showcasing Durban’s best venues…
Green Mango is a well-known venue in Durban recognised for its great sushi, Japanese and Thai foods and is a venue that gets very busy. It has an indoor and outdoor area, a sushi counter and a bar and they are very welcoming – the only time you’ll feel neglected is when it is time to paying the bill. The menu is varied with great starters (try the platters and soups) and the sushi is of a wide selection; a recommendation is to have the Chef’s Sandwich which consists of six pieces (two types of fish topped on nori seaweed, sushi rice, spring onions and sprinkled with sesame seeds).
Location: Avonmore Centre, Shop 12a, 9th Avenue, Morningside, Durban.

At Daruma you can expect fresh, attractive, healthy and affordable traditional Japanese food. You can watch their tappanyaki chefs at work or relax at the sushi bar when ordering, and there’s a selection of sake, Japanese beers and umeshu. Daruma comes highly recommended in Durban as one of the best, if not the best, and the sushi is very good, the rice fresh and textured, and the service is great.
