You have to love all the things you can spend your hard-earned money on, be it cars, houses or designer clothing. We think that one of the ultimate luxuries a man can buy is a glamorous super yacht to sail the open ocean with.
When you’re buying a super yacht you have to look for a few things: comfort, style, size and, of course, cost (we will save all the technicalities for another post). Bearing these points in mind, we made a list of the best yachts money can buy, if they were up for sale of course.
The first yacht we have on our list is the Rising Sun. The Rising Sun is owned by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation, and a guy better known as David Geffen. It has a private cinema, Jacuzzi bathrooms and a basketball court that doubles as a helipad. It cost a nice R2.2 billion to make which makes it one of the most expensive super yachts on the planet.
Next we have the Lady Moura, owned by French businessman Jean-Louis Fort Vollmers-Wenzel (yes we know; a long name, but it seems to work for him). It has the usual glamorous features including a must-have helipad. The biggest “I am an expensive yacht” factor must be its name in 24 carat cold.
Mr Abramovich has two yachts on this list. The first one is the Pelorus which cost R900 million to make, which is mere pocket change for the Russian “businessman”. We think it’s one of the best-looking super yachts out there and, with a mini-submarine on board, it is definitely one of the most-fun super yachts to spend your summer holiday on.
Roman’s other yacht, parked in his garage full of them, is the Eclipse. It cost about R7.5 billion and would take Usain Bolt about 16 seconds to cover the entire length (about 160 odd meters). You know those little tug boats/ life boats strapped to the sides of the really big ones? Well the Pelorus is basically one of those, next to this super yacht. The Russian mobster has an entire German-built missile defence system. Wait, did we say mobster?
Bill’s friend at Microsoft, Paul Allen, has a R1.5 billion super yacht called Octopus; remember that when you purchase your next copy of Windows 7. This has all the bells and whistles and pretty much has double of everything so even the guests don’t have to fight over where to land the helicopters and which submarine to use. This yacht is more like a theme park minus the roller coasters.
The last super yacht we have for you is the grandest of them all. Naturally it would be owned by a sheik from the UAE and has even been dubbed the Dubai. Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum purchased it for about R3 billion and got a whole lot of luxury with that. It may not be the biggest, by a few meters, or the most expensive but it does have the best interior. You could call it a floating hotel and we all know what hotels you get in Dubai.
