Most off-road vehicle owners hardly use their vehicles for bundu bashing, but they are a common sight with city slickers and those with a penchant for power and performance. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG ticks all the boxes when it comes to fast, furious and fully powered.
The third generation of ML, Mercedes still offers an AMG version like its predecessors. This sturdy off-roader is powered by the 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8, which makes it both more powerful and more efficient than its predecessor, which housed AMG’s spectacular 6.2-liter V-8 under its bonnet.
The “entry” version of the new forced-induction eight is rated at 518hp and 516lb-ft. The raunchier performance package pushes the output to 550 horses and 560lb-ft. Those ponies translate to a claimed 0-to-60mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155mph (4.6 seconds and 174mph with the Performance pack).
The 2012 ML63 still is heavy—estimated 5 100 pounds which means fuel economy is just 16mpg combined. The fat, high-performance tyres on standard 20- or optional 21-inch wheels (265/45s on the former, 295/35s on the latter), are slightly lazy on the city roads, but this ML retains its all-wheel-drive system, while power is transmitted through a seven-speed automatic.
The air suspension has three driver-selectable settings, but it also lowers the body on its own at higher speeds to minimise drag.
To add to luxury and fun the M-class, Mercedes sports a front fascia with massive intakes, wider fenders, and a rear skirt with integrated diffuser. The interior is fitted with sport seats, a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel, and special leather upholstery throughout.
With four exhaust pipes you’re sure to let fellow drivers know exactly what you’re hiding under that bonnet.
