Bali is an Indonesian island situated in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Known as “The Island of the Gods” it is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its diverse and performing arts, like as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, music, and performing arts, plus you’ll find around 13,000 temples there. The island has beautiful surroundings (both mountain and coastal), diverse tourist attractions, tremendous international and local restaurants, and friendly locals.
The island is surrounded by coral reefs and the beaches in the south have white sand while those in the north and west have black sand – with the seaside temple of Tanah Lot being a significant tourism spot there. The largest city is the capital, Denpasar, near the southern coast and the second-largest city is the old colonial capital, Singaraja, which is located on the north coast.
Main tourist locations include the beach resort of Kuta, and its outer suburbs of Legian and Seminyak, the east coast town of Sansur (in the centre of the island Ubud – which is known as the island’s cultural centre), to the south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Jimbaran, and the newer development of Nusa Dua and Pecatu. The Tirtha Empul Temple draws a lot of tourists who seek its holy waters, as well as Pura Taman Ayun, another temple which is a popular tourist destination. High-end five star projects are in progress on the Bukit peninsula, on the south side of the island, with million dollar villas being developed along the cliff sides, imposing panoramic ocean views.
A Bali holiday can be cheap, depending on your budget, and hotel and villa accommodation range from five star hotels to villas, bungalows and budget inns – the range of accommodation can vary from the US$3 (a night) guesthouses to US$4,300 (a night) resorts. The cheaper deals can be found in Kuta, Candidasa and Lovina (Singaraja), making backpacking easy and inexpensive. On a cheaper budget US$20 a day would be adequate and for those looking for superior accommodation and more activities, US$40-50 per day would be better suited.
Bali received the “Best Island” award from Travel and Leisure in 2010, the Hotel Four Seasons Resort, Jimbaran, received an award for “World Best Hotel Spas in Asia 2010”, and the Ayana Resort received “Number One Spa in the World” by Conde Naste’s Traveller Magazine in 2010 by their readers’ poll. So, it’s fair to say Bali is a great destination and one that would suit any budget or travel idea. Make it happen…
