EFC Africa 11, taking place at the Coca-Cola Dome on 10 November, features two of the year’s most significant title fights, plus fan favourites that have been requested all-year round.
The event’s main fight sees heavyweight wrecking machine Andrew ‘One Gear’ van Zyl challenge current highly acclaimed champion Ruan ‘Fangzz’ Potts in a war that has everyone talking about the outcome. FLUX Mag spoke with these two great fighters to get their insight for the upcoming event and this is what they had to say…
Ruan Potts Interview:
Has your training changed since holding the title and what’s new?
My training is still intense and is still ever improving as is my performance, stamina and skill with every training session and every fight. I have a properly organised training camp for this fight, whereas I did not have any training camp for my title fight against Norman Wessels.
In your fight against Norman Wessels, did you feel tested more than expected and how does that change things being the fighter defending the title?
I knew Norman had some skills and therefore wasn’t too hasty in getting the win in the first few rounds. I prepared for him to take it into the later rounds and hope I gassed and it went according to plan. I have studied some footage on Andrew and have a game plan with him as I do with all my fights thus far, so the title doesn’t play a determining factor.
Are you expecting Andrew van Zyl to be your toughest fight to date?
I prepare for every fight to be tough and being a professional, you need to do that and never underestimate any opponent and respect them regardless what their record is.
Have you watched/studied Andrew’s fights and what are your thoughts of him as a fighter and your next opponent?
I have studied some footage of Andrews fights and as I expressed in my previous statement, I don’t underestimate any fight or any fighter and I have a game plan for every fight and this fight is no different.
How do you expect this fight go in terms of duration, long or short?
I never predict the duration; I listen to my body and if my body and mind are ready to finish the fight, then it will happen at that moment.
Andrew van Zyl Interview:
Since watching Ruan’s last fight against Norman Wessles, what are your thoughts going into this fight?
I have reviewed his last fight quite a few times and I’ve studied his strong points. I’m ready and excited about the fight. I’m focussed and am confident that I will be ready for him. He’ll probably try to take me to the cage from a stand-up point of view. Either way, I’m excited about it.
What is your training like leading up to this fight? Anything new?
I’m very fortunate, I have great coaches and training partners, but the game plan has stayed pretty much the same. I’ve been focusing on strength and conditioning and haven’t changed much in terms of training – the idea is to stick to a winning formula. I’ve been working with Mark Herbert a lot too lately doing more ground work.
Both of you have a clean fight record, how tough do you think this fight will be for you?
I’m trying to stay focused and not get caught up in the hype of it all. There is a lot of hype around the fight but I want to, and will be, bringing my A-game. Ruan’s a calm guy, he has that air of calmness about him but I expect to rock that a bit.
Do you expect this fight to be a technical or hard hitting fight?
I think it will be more technical. He tends to wait, while I bring it.
If you take the title how do you see the fight ending?
It’s difficult to predict these things, he has a good track record and he can talk as much as he wants to, but I don’t buy into that. I think he’s probably a bit more rattled because he has the title on the line. Obviously I’m training at altitude level whereas he’ll be coming here from Cape Town. I’m ready and focused. I reckon it’ll either be a TKO or a KO.
